The Richmond Hill Center for Business Development (CBD) drives collaboration between Canadian based Pro-Lab Diagnostics and Finland based Medicortex, bringing groundbreaking research for early detection of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to Canada

Medicortex Finland is dedicated to improving the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute neurodegenerative conditions and is currently focused on developing a diagnostic kit for the detection of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Toronto, May 24, 2018 – The Richmond Hill Center for Business Development (CBD) today announced an Agreement that will see an investment by Richmond Hill-based Pro-Lab Diagnostics into Medicortex, a Finland – based company that is developing a unique biomarker test based on one of the body fluids to determine whether victims have sustained a brain injury as a result of a hit to the head from a fall, a vehicular accident or a sports related activity. At this time, no accurate and definite diagnostic tool exists for such brain injuries.

Pro-Lab Diagnostics will also serve as a general distributor for Medicortex in Canada while, at the same time, providing assistance in regulatory work including Health Canada approval.
The Agreement between the two companies is the result of efforts initiated and orchestrated by the Richmond Hill based, CBD, who specialize in international trade and business development consulting, assisting Israeli and other international companies in developing sustainable and long term growth strategies through successful expansion into the North American markets. The Center offers a wide range of business services designed to help successfully expand a company’s product or service offering in the local markets. The “Center” is located in, and supported by, the Town of Richmond Hill. Local sponsors of the CBD also include Sun Life Financial, Compugen, and Pro-Lab Diagnostics.

Medicortex

Medicortex Finland Oy was founded in June 2014 as a BioTurku member; its laboratories are located in the Turku Science Park Bioincubator. The company is developing a novel diagnostic kit and new drugs to halt the process of neuronal degradation that persists following brain injury. Medicortex’s aim is to develop a simple, easy-to-use and inexpensive test based on a biomarker found in one of the body fluids.

The joint partnership initiative recently announced by Baycrest Health Sciences and the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) is part of a Canada-Israel Collaboration Program that provides up to $250,000 (CAD) from CABHI and additional funding from IIA that can be leveraged by commercial organizations in Israel to test their aging and brain health innovations at Ontario senior’s care organizations. This program supports Israeli companies in deriving international scientific evidence to accelerate their innovations.  In turn, Canadian organizations will have the opportunity to test cutting edge solutions addressing key challenges in seniors’ care. Moreover, the program contributes to Canada’s innovation economy, building on our strengths to turn ideas into action.

HeartBeat Technologies (HBT) has developed proprietary software that enables doctors, nurses and individuals to remotely monitor heart related parameters and provide non-invasive care management. HBT’s solution combines off-the-shelf wearable sensors with powerful proprietary cloud-based software to form a comprehensive patient monitoring system.
